How to DIY your own beeswax food wraps?

Method 1

Melting these premixed beeswax blocks is a straightforward process, and you can use various methods depending on your preferences and the scale of your project. We recommend laying your cotton material onto a baking tray, grating the premix block evenly over the material. Pre-heat the oven to 140 degrees. Place the tray into the oven for 2 minutes until everything is well melted. Pick up the wrap with tongs or your fingers if you are brave (it will be hot, so hold at the corners) and wave in the air to cool off.

Method 2

A second method is using a double boiler and not the microwave (of course it’s up to you though). Add the blocks into a double boiler or a heatproof bowl over a pot and heat over a medium heat until melted. Do not walk away from heating beeswax as even on a low heat if left unattended it will burn and turn dark in colour. Pre-heat the oven to 140 degrees. Place the cotton material onto the tray and use a new paint brush to paint the wax mixture on evenly. Put into the oven for 2 minutes until completely incorporated. Pick up the wrap with tongs or your fingers if you are brave (it will be hot, so hold at the corners) and wave in the air to cool off.

Melt and pour temperature: 70 – 80 degrees.

How to make Beeswax Wraps using our DIY Blocks?

Melting beeswax pellets is a straightforward process, and you can use various methods depending on your preferences and the scale of your wax wrap project. There are many different methods for making these wraps – in the oven or using an iron. My method for making a heap of beeswax wraps is:

1. Melt the DIY Beeswax Wrap Easy Premix Block into a double boiler on low heat (approx 60-70 degrees). We recommend using a double boiler and not the microwave (of course it’s up to you though).

2. Lay material onto a large oven tray and turn the oven on to 100 – 120 degrees.

3. Once the block are melted in the double boiler, use a dedicated new paint brush to paint the mix onto the material out to each edge evenly.

4. Pop the tray with the coated material into the oven for 2 minutes.

5. Take out of the oven and immediately peel off the material and tap the edge onto the tray to prevent pooling at one end. Then wave a few times in the breeze.

1 block should refresh 1 x 30 x 30 cm food wrap or equivalent.

6 blocks (50g) should make 2 x 30 x 30 cm food wrap from scratch.

12 blocks (100g) should make 4 x 30 x 30 cm food wrap from scratch.

If you are just making one or two using the iron method you can sprinkle a grated block directly onto the fabric, cover both under the fabric and over the pellets with greaseproof paper and iron on low heat. It’s easier to add more than clean up the mess of having too much on there.

Beeswax never goes bad. Store in a sealed environment so that beeswax loving creatures don’t try to steal it from you or lay in it :).

Here is a video on my application for making the wax wraps but there are many different methods including grease proof paper and an iron.

Tips and Safety Precautions:
  • Caution: Beeswax is flammable at high temperatures, so avoid direct heat and open flames.
  • Do not walk away from heating beeswax as even on a low heat if left unattended it will burn and turn dark in colour.
  • Cleanup: Use disposable tools or be prepared for a thorough cleanup, as beeswax melded with pine resin can be challenging to remove once solidified if it isn’t on a surface that can be reheated. If using an oven tray, just wipe off any excess with a paper towel or pour excess into a container that can be remelted for your next use
